Figure majeure de la photographie à Gaza au milieu du XXe siècle, Kegham Djeghalian Senior (1915-1981) a documenté la ville et ses habitants pendant près de 40 ans. Rescapé du génocide arménien, il fonde en 1944 le premier studio photographique professionnel de Gaza : Photo Kegham.
Cette exposition organisée en quatre thématiques, est conçue par son petit-fils Kegham Djeghalian Junior - artiste et enseignant - qui ravive ici cet héritage tout en explorant la notion d’« histoires interrompues. » En 2018 il découvre trois boîtes rouges enfouies au fond d’un placard chez son père au Caire. Remplies de négatifs, de documents et de souvenirs familiaux, elles révèlent non seulement la vie de son grand-père, mais aussi témoignent d’une mémoire plus vaste de Gaza.
D’abord centrée sur la figure de son grand-père, la recherche de Djeghalian Junior s’ouvre progressivement à une lecture élargie et non linéaire de l’histoire visuelle de Gaza. En refusant dates et légendes, il interroge la nature même de l’archive et fait émerger le potentiel de ce qu’il nomme une unmade archive : une archive ouverte, inachevable, réfractaire à toute clôture. Préférant une approche typologique à une organisation chronologique, ses installations photographiques esquissent, avec subtilité, une historiographie alternative de Gaza.
L’exposition est présentée pour la première fois en France dans le cadre de la Saison Méditerranée, avec le soutien de l’Institut français et en partenariat avec Photopia et Cairo Photo Week .
Elle fait partie de la programmation satellite des Rencontres d’Arles dans le cadre du Grand Arles Express et s’inscrit dans le cadre du Printemps de l’Art Contemporain.

A major figure in photography in Gaza in the mid-20th century, Kegham Djeghalian Senior (1915–1981) documented the city and its inhabitants for nearly 40 years. Survivor of the Armenian genocide, he founded Gaza’s first professional photography studio in 1944 : Photo Kegham.
This exhibition, organized around four thematic sections, has been conceived by his grandson Kegham Djeghalian Junior—an artist and educator— who brings this legacy to life whilst exploring the concept of ‘interrupted stories.’ In 2018, he discovered three red boxes hidden at the back of a cupboard at his father’s home in Cairo. Filled with negatives, documents, and family mementos, they reveal not only his grandfather’s life but also bear witness to a broader memory of Gaza.
Initially focused on the figure of his grandfather, Djeghalian Junior’s research gradually expands toward a broader and non-linear reading of Gaza’s visual history. By rejecting dates and captions, he questions the very nature of the archive and brings forward the potential of what he calls an ‘unmade archive’ : an open-ended, unfinishable archive, resistant to closure. Favoring a typological approach over chronological organization, his photographic installations subtly outline an alternative historiography of Gaza
This exhibition is presented as part of the Saison Méditerranée, with the support & partnership of the Institut français, Photopia and Cairo Photo Week. It is part of the Rencontres d’Arles satellite program within the Grand Arles Express, and also included in the Printemps de l’Art Contemporain.

Kegham Djeghalian Junior est un artiste visuel, directeur artistique et professionnel de la mode palestino-arménien basé au Caire et à Paris, dont le travail se situe à la croisée de la photographie, de l’image, des archives et des pratiques de la mode. Il est professeur à la German International University (GIU), où il occupe le poste de directeur artistique du département de création de mode. Ses œuvres, recherches et interventions ont été exposées et présentées dans de nombreuses institutions internationales dont le Centre Pompidou à Paris, la Photographers Gallery à Londres et La Biennale de Sharjah aux Émirats arabes unis.

Kegham Djeghalian Junior is a Palestinian-Armenian visual artist, art director, and fashion professional based in Cairo and Paris, whose work lies at the intersection of photography, imagery, archives, and fashion practices. He is a professor at the German International University (GIU), where he serves as Art Director of the Fashion Design Department. His works, research, and projects have been exhibited and presented in numerous international institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, The Photographers’ Gallery in London, and the Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates.
